STEM
exploration from young children
STEM education originated in the United States and
now it has gradually entered the field from kindergarten to university. STEM
includes science, technology, engineering and mathematics. However, its essence
is not to advocate that children learn independent subjects, but hope to
integrate, explore knowledge in problem solving and integrate learning based on
using hands to solve problems. Compared with traditional single-subject
knowledge, STEM can be more explored and applied in real life and stimulate
children's intrinsic learning motivation.
STEM Contact STEM in daily life
Young children are natural explorers and
scientists. STEM learning does not need a specific curriculum design. STEM
learning opportunities can be found everywhere in nature and life. Children are
not to satisfy the external requirements, but to spontaneously and curiously
install and remove objects, operate buttons, explore new materials or
spontaneously build various materials by themselves. Using the familiar story
“Three Little Pigs ”as an example, there are many STEM learning elements in
this activity: The three little Pigs built houses made of straw, wood and
bricks and explore the properties of different materials is the domain of
physical science. Later learning about the construction of three different
houses can incorporate mathematical elements, such as shape, measuring size and
height, which involve mathematical concepts. In the engineering field, children
can use different materials and tools to solve construction problems, such as
modeling houses with blocks, LEGO or natural materials. This is the integrated
application of knowledge advocated by STEM education. Learning can be done in a
real environment by children to participate in activities, to present the
knowledge in the story for children to solve problems and explore the creation
in different forms. This process about exploration and learning is definitely
not for the purpose of storing subject knowledge or boring extra training
activities, but for children to take the initiative to understand phenomena about STEM in their lives and
understand the world through diversified learning methods.
日常生活接觸
幼兒是天生的探索家和科學家,STEM 學習並不一定需要單獨的課程設計,在大自然和生活中 隨處可見 STEM 學習機會。孩子不是為了滿足外界要求,而是自發好奇地裝拆物件,操作按鈕, 探索新物料或自發搭建各種材料。用大家很熟悉的《三隻小豬》為例,活動中包涵了不少 STEM 學習元素:小豬三兄弟所建造的房子用了稻草、木頭和磚頭,探索不同材料的屬性就是 物理科學的範疇。之後瞭解三種不同房子的建造又可以融入數學元素,例如形狀、測量大小和 高度就涉及數學的概念。在工程範疇,小朋友可以用不同材料和工具來解決建構問題,例如模 仿用積木、LEGO 或者天然材料來建造房子。這是以 STEM 教育主張的知識整合運用。學習可 以在真實環境中讓小朋友動手做來參與活動,以不同形式把故事中的知識呈現讓小朋友解決問 題和探索創造。這個探索學習過程絕對不是為了儲存學科知識,也不是枯燥的額外訓練活動, 而是讓小朋友主動瞭解生活中與 STEM 相關的現象,透過多元化的學習方法來認識世界。
